From the archives: Compost

Sunday 7th October:

Ollie and Rich invaded the compost bin, pulling out plenty of carpet and a load of plastic – the previous occupier seems to have ignored the “compost” bit of “compost bin”.

Underneath all the junk, there was some decent rotted stuff. We split the bin in two with a door (expertly made to fit by Rich, with a little precision whacking with the hammer). This should let us have one half full of nice rotted compost for putting in the ground, and the other half with fresh stuff that hasn’t rotted yet.

Gary did some watering. The cabbages, etc, are mostly looking OK. They have some new netting over them now to keep the birds out. The slug traps are doing their job well. Our radishes are coming through well, you can see all four rows clearly. They will need thinning soon. No sign of the onions yet, but thats to be expected (according to the seed packet, anyway).

Gary and Rich dug a trench, about two spade-blades deep and 40-50cm wide, along the top of the most recently dug bed. We’ve filled the bottom half with compost, and then covered it over. Apparently this is what you do to make beans happy. (Rich found out about how to make beans happy using the internet. Gary didn’t approve of this. Beans = happy; Gary = sad.)

Rob arrived bearing gifts of biscuits, wine gums and sloe gin.

Rob and Gary set to work with some more digging, the other side of the cabbages. The next bed is all broken up, ready for the root removal process.

By this time it was getting dark, so we braved the Meadows and went home for tea.
