From the archives: Planting

On the 26th of September (the last day of the summer holidays for lazy students), we got some veg in the ground. Hopefully they’re going to grow!

Into the bed that we found the potatoes in, we sowed:

  • Three rows of Radishes (French Breakfast 3, according to the packet). Apparently you can plant them up to the end of September, and they should be ready to eat in three weeks.
  • Three rows of Onions (White Lisbon). These are winter hardy and should be ready in March or April.

Into our other dug bed, we planted:

  • 12 Cabbage (January King).
  • 12 Calabrese (Arcadia). This is basically Broccoli.
  • 12 Savoy Cabbage (Omskirk).

We picked these up, as small plants, from Homebase. Who knows what will happen with these. The instructions don’t really tell you when to plant out. The word is that they should survive the winter, so hopefully we’ll get a crop come spring.

We also bought a ton of daffodil bulbs. The plan is to have them down either side of the path for some colour in the spring. For now, we have just put them into the ends of the beds that we have got stuff planted in. We also popped some in a row along the front fence.

A nice man offered us a cuppa over his back fence. Another nice man gave us a (massive) cucumber. Yet another nice man stopped in his car for a chat. They’re all very friendly down there.

Oh, and James came too.
